Citation Boulevard – KY 1878
- Project Owner: Kentucky Transportation Cabinet & Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.
- Location: Fayette County, KY
Upon its completion, Citation Boulevard will extend around the north of Lexington, KY. Construction of the first two of the three phases is complete. J.M. Crawford & Associates provided all structure design for the first two phases as a structure sub-consultant to the project’s prime roadway consultant.
Citation Boulevard is a 4-lane urban arterial facility with bike lanes, a depressed median, curbs, gutters and sidewalks. Phase I included a 2-span, 100’-100’ prestressed concrete bridge on breastwall abutments and frame piers. The deck is approximately 124’ wide with sidewalks on both sides. This bridge crosses Cane Run Creek and part of a public park. Phase II includes two dual-deck structures. The first is a 100’ single span prestressed concrete bridge over Bracktown Branch and a proposed bike/pedestrian path in a residential area. The second is a 3-span 70’-99’-70’ prestressed concrete bridge over dual tracks of the Norfolk-Southern Railroad.
A major design consideration in all three of these bridges is that they fit aesthetically into their settings. The bridge over Cane Run Creek was required to enhance its passive park surroundings. Likewise, the Bracktown Branch Bridge is sensitive to its neighborhood setting. Both utilize precast fascia panels, stone veneer and special railing to invoke the rustic feel of stone arch structures. The Norfolk-Southern Bridge makes modest use of stone in its less visible setting.
These bridges demonstrate J.M. Crawford & Associates’ experience in designing bridges of moderate span lengths that are aesthetically appropriate to their environments. Construction of Phase I of this project was completed in 2000 with the structure portion costing approximately $1,700,000. Phase II construction wrapped up in 2014 with the structure portion costing approximately $3,961,492.
